Marika Hackman
Although she has experimented stylistically with production and presentation, singer and songwriter Marika Hackman is known for her emotionally honest and personal lyrics. She first made a name for herself with a spare, acoustic-oriented approach but explored more full-bodied sounds as her career progressed. On her breakthrough album, 2015's We Slept at Last, Hackman's voice displayed a breathy near whisper that hovered over minimal, low-key arrangements, but she showed more confidence as a singer on 2017's I'm Not Your Man with accompaniment that blended contemporary folk and indie rock. It marked her Sub Pop and Virgin EMI debuts. She made another creative shift on 2019's Any Human Friend, where her songs were more straightforward, and keyboards and dance-pop grooves dominated several tracks. She added strings and a horn section to self-performed rock arrangements on her Chrysalis Records debut, 2024's more anxious Big Sigh, which followed a period of struggling to write.
Born in 1992 in Hampshire, England, and raised in Selborne and Devon, Marika Hackman first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and taught herself how to play. Her parents were animators and encouraged her and her brother to be creative by limiting their television time. Both children earned scholarships to Bedales School, which was famed for its celebrity students, including Sophie Dahl and Lily Allen, and was described by Tatler as "a bohemian idyll with bite." During her time there, Hackman met and befriended future model Cara Delevingne. The duo went on to form a band for a brief time, with Hackman on drums and Delevingne on guitar and vocals. Following her time at Bedales, she moved to Brighton to study art, but her yearning to make music won out in the end and led her to move to London's East End after just a year. Folk singer/songwriter Johnny Flynn also attended the same school and went on to produce Hackman's first single, 2012's "You Come Down." He also helped her secure a record deal with Transgressive. After the single's release, she came to the attention of the fashion brand Burberry and was chosen for their 2012 ad campaign, appearing in their online acoustic music series. During this time, her brother was also gaining exposure as a house music producer under the name Hackman.
By 2013, Marika had released her first EP, Free Covers, a collection of non-original material. In the same year, she also put out two further EPs, That Iron Taste and Sugar Blind, which consisted entirely of her own compositions and were produced by Alt-J's Charlie Andrew. She spent the rest of the year touring with Laura Marling as her support act. By 2015, Hackman was all set to release her debut long-player. We Slept at Last received a warm critical reception, and once again, Marling invited her on tour for what would be her first North American performances. The follow-up to her debut came in 2017, preceded by the lead single "Boyfriend." Both the single and the album I'm Not Your Man featured London group the Big Moon as backing vocalists and instrumentalists. In August 2019, her third full-length album, Any Human Friend, became available and found her fusing bold lyrics about love and sexuality with a brighter, pop-oriented sound.
During a break from touring that coincided with a period of writer's block, both due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, November 2020 brought Covers, a set recorded at home that featured intimate, stripped-down interpretations of some of Hackman's favorite songs, including tunes by Radiohead, the Shins, Beyoncé, Grimes, and others. She eventually found her way back to the studio with new material and made her Chrysalis Records debut in September 2023 with the self-recorded single "No Caffeine," a song about trying to stave off a panic attack. It featured additional production from Charlie Andrew and Sam Petts-Davies (Thom Yorke, Warpaint). The three of them shared production duties on its accompanying album, January 2024's Big Sigh. It found Hackman playing most of the instruments herself, except for its string section and horns.
