British singer-songwriter Polly Scattergood may draw comparisons to CocoRosie, Tori Amos, and Cat Power, but the breathy chanteuse has developed a unique sound on her full-length debut, NITROGEN PINK. These are fragile, piano-based songs in which Scattergood’s cracked, evocative voice delivers poetic, often confessional narratives. A progressive tendency shines through in the album’s unusual arrangements, but it’s Scattergood’s straight-to-the-soul performances on tunes like “I Hate the Way” and “Poem Song” that make this first showing memorable.
