Daniel Avery's debut album Drone Logic was an impressive coming-out party for the young producer. Mixing up old-school techno and IDM with acid house and electro in a nearly perfect blend, while writing songs that had beginnings and ends, the album had instant classic written all over it. Enough so that lots of Avery's contemporaries asked for the privilege of remixing tracks from it, with a bunch of them ending up on post-album singles. Avery decided it would be a good idea to round them up in one place, while also commissioning a batch of artists he liked to do remixes. The resulting package, 2015's New Energy, is a nice reworking of Drone Logic by people who truly seem to get what Avery was going for. Kicking off with a stripped-down and propulsive mix of "Drone Logic" by the always reliable Factory Floor, the remixers mostly stick to the template Avery uses -- being dancefloor-friendly yet tricky enough for non-club listening. A few people take some welcome liberties: Matt Walsh makes a woozy mix of "Free Floating" that slaps fat 303 squiggles everywhere; Special Request breaks "Taste" in small pieces, then reassembles it fascinatingly; and Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve do a very odd, but kinda amazing, mash-up of backwards psychedelia and Afrika Bambaataa-style beats on "New Energy." There's not a single weak mix on either of the two discs, and if none of them can top the source material, they always do something interesting, which is something not many collections of remixes can claim.
