Als “Smells Like Teen Spirit” het enige goede nummer op Nevermind was geweest, zou het album zeker de populaire omwenteling niet teweeg hebben gebracht die het deed. Hoewel het de opgekropte The Pixies-achtige tienerfrustratie is van “Teen Spirit” die Nirvana deed doorbreken, wat het album zo bewonderenswaardig maakt is de enorme sprong vooruit in Kurt Cobains songschrijverschap. De ratelende punk rockers “Breed” en “Territorial Pissings” slopen alles wat er op Bleach stond, en het spookachtige “Something in the Way” en “Polly” tonen Cobains hele reikwijdte aan. Nog beter zijn “In Bloom,” “Drain You,” “On a Plain,” en “Lithium,” waarop zowel het melodieuze als het sonische geweld, dat Nirvana zo goed in de vingers heeft, gecombineerd worden.
