The appropriately titled MY LAST GO ROUND marks the end of folk singer Rosalie Sorrels's final tour, wrapping up 40 years of a musical life on the road. Sorrels is a familiar name to folk fans, who have long admired her dedication to the American folk tradition, as well as the personal intensity and passion she brings to her performances. Recorded live in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2002, MY LAST GO ROUND features Sorrels backed by a six-piece ensemble, and joined by guests Loudon Wainwright III, Christine Lavin, and Jean Ritchie.
The full band gives many of Sorrels's tunes an easy country feel, as on the swaying "I Think of You" and the Utah Phillips song "The Telling Takes Me Home." But folk songs that nod to European tradition and a pre-war rural America are also represented by cuts like the a cappella "Aishling Gael" and the solo acoustic "Wind Chimes." Sorrels's voice is well weathered and wise, and the concert is punctuated by her warm, witty stories and hard-luck tales, giving this solid live album an endearing campfire intimacy.
