It’s been six years. It seems like a long time to be kept waiting, but this is undoubtedly her finest album to date. Anohni returns with her Johnsons for this fifth album, presenting a contemporary narrative rooted in the American soul of the 70s. It's a change of direction after the Björkian electronica of Hopelessness, released under Anohni's own name, but  given Anohni's love of the Motown sound it’s hardly surprising. As Marvin Gaye had already done in 1971 with What's Going On, the New York based Englishwoman wraps hot-button issues - ecocide and transgender rights - in a deep, honeyed, painful soul, that's tremulous and thin rather than thick. With their parsimonious instrumentation, the tracks unfold their languor over simple, addictive bass lines (Can't, about mourning), a few chords (You Be Free) or piano notes like Why I Am Alive Now, that are reminiscent of Boy George’s vocal tone. Her voice sways with the tracks and the roles she plays, reaching graceful heights, like when her falsetto breaks dramatically on the moving ballad There Wasn't Enough, borrowing the voice of a dying Earth lamenting the fatal greed of mankind. It's an album as sublime as it is necessary, as much in its message as in its incandescent beauty. She gives it the face of the activist and figurehead of the Stonewall riots, Marsha P. Johnson - whose surname she already bears - for the cover, as an added tribute. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
