Here's a slightly different take on Senegalese music. Influenced by American singer/songwriters in their song structures and style, the duo of Pape & Cheikh has created something quite unique for their country. It's instantly recognizable to Western audiences -- except for the Wolof lyrics -- but with enough Senegalese touches to make it exotic, like the bubbling sabar drums that kick the beat along, or the guitar work on "Jello." And like the American artists who inspired them, they've made a political change with their music. "Yatal Gueew" made a huge impact on candidates contesting Senegal's 2001 election. But there's plenty here with massive sonic impact, such as the heartfelt "Soni" or the urgent "Kokiliko." Both Pape & Cheikh play a mean acoustic guitar, with short, potent phrases, while their voices complement and work off each other perfectly in a very American manner -- as on "Kamalemba." Bridging two worlds in a wonderful manner, they've created something warm and accessible that promises to strike a global chord.
