Steve Gorn, on Bansuri bamboo flute, with Marc Levison on tamboura, has produced an effervescent, colorful recording of Indian-inspired music on Luminous Ragas. The ragas are evening ragas and as such take on the character not of darkness, but of a light in the darkness. The last raga, traditional Hindu music with a prescribed musical framework of melodic formulas and rhythmic patterns, is an interesting, free-flowing piece. It begins slow and without body or shape, with the musical images out of focus or foggy, the flute seemingly shifting from a dream state to reality, and then develops into a quick-paced, staccato arrangement bursting with energy.
