Short and sweet, Katie Melua’s ninth album reflects the sunny attitude of the singer when this album was conceived. She was pregnant at the time, as the album cover reveals, which gave her the opportunity to take stock of her career and her profession in general: what role do women play in the music industry? How do you juggle family life and a career? Golden Record, The opening track, attempts to answer these questions over an effervescent piano that sets a haunting rhythm. Produced by Leo Abrahams (who’s worked with Brian Eno and Regina Spektor), Love & Money is peppered with heart-warming folk tunes (14 Windows, Lie In The Heat, First Date) and clean arrangements (Pick Me Up). This short album ends with a brilliant country waltz (Those Sweet Days), as well as the song that gives the release its name, in which Katie Melua’s beautifully velvety voice is accompanied by nothing but a guitar and a violin. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
