Maria Callas: Live in Amsterdam 1959 is the first EMI packaging of a concert that has been available in many other forms, including a semi-legit release on the Italian label Verona. Callas is in particularly fine form here, singing at the 1959 Holland Festival with the help of the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam under Nicola Rescigno. The recording, made by Radio Nederland, is not "hi-fi" and a little gritty, but it isn't bad; you get used to it and it is far better than average for live concerts of Callas. This is part of the recent series of Callas re-issues where EMI Classics is attempting to "beat the boots" through releasing its own high quality versions of live Maria Callas material. Maria Callas: Live in Amsterdam 1959 is one of the better concerts to be found among such recordings and should prove satisfying to most anyone who would care to seek it out -- the booklet contains some marvelous photographs of Callas taken during her time in Amsterdam. Bon appetit!
