Successful debut records can sometimes be a curse but from the buzzy opening guitar riff of "I'm Not Getting Excited," it's clear that Jump Rope Gazers is the sound of The Beths decisively charging forward in defiance of their debut's title, Future Me Hates Me. Led by the hooky pop punk songwriting of Elizabeth Stokes, the New Zealand quartet refine their signature mix of softer, song-focused indie folk and Weezer-styled turbo guitar roar and crunch. The approach and energies are again fresh and welcome, and producer, engineer and guitarist Jonathan Pearce has forcefully captured a band on an undeniable upward trajectory. Much of that rise is driven by Stokes' growth as both a lyricist and singer—her voice conveys more confidence and expressiveness. While the pleading, tuneful "Do You Want Me Now" may be too semantically unfeigned for its own good, "Dying to Believe," the title track, and especially "Acrid" fluently match broody lyrics with adorned with her signature upward trill in what is the current essence of Stokes' leery love songs: "I'm trying to lie like a pro/And I know it looks easy from the outside/But it's hard to hold your brow just so/Enough to show/I've got other places to go tonight." It's a feat she repeats in "Out of Sight, Out of Heart," where a line like "If your world collapses/I'll be down in the rubble," lands exactly right. Stokes, Pearce, bassist Benjamin Sinclair and drummer Tristan Deck (all of whom also sing) indulge their sunny, acoustic side on the album's final tracks "You Are a Beam of Light," and the hedging optimism of the marvelously titled "Just Shy of Sure." After this impressive leap forward can what lies ahead be even brighter? © Robert Baird/Qobuz
