Jeff Wayne's marvelously bombastic musical rendering of War of the Worlds has undergone any number of mutations since it was first conceived, most notably the multi-disc box set in 2005, and the following year's live performances. Dating from close to a decade before either of those, ULLAdubULLA was born out of a Playstation rendering of the album, for which Wayne not only composed a new piece of music, the title track, but also undertook a string of updated re-recordings of the original album's musical highlights. ULLAdubULLA is a surprisingly essential adjunct to the main attraction. Featuring performances by the likes of Papa Ootzie, Hani, Max Mondo, and Todd Terry, alongside Hybrid's U.K. hit "The Eve of the War," it reimagines the Martian invasion against a backdrop of breakbeats and club grooves, a scenario that may have dated considerably faster than the parent disc ever could, but which nevertheless sounds surprisingly vibrant. N-Trance's revision of "Forever Autumn" is especially enjoyable.
