Op Icky Thump, zoeken Jack en Meg White de grenzen op van hun luide kant. Het titelnummer is hun eigen “Immigrant Song,” met gitaar die kwaad chuggen en teksten die ergens liggen tussen koortsdromerige meditaties over roodharige señoritas en politieke statements. “Little Cream Soda” is ook geweldig, waarop gedeclameerde spoken word coupletten gekoppeld worden aan schurende surf-metal gitaren, wat het tot een van de Stripes’ zwaarste nummers maakt. Zo fantastisch als de rockers zijn, net zo belangrijk zijn de adempauzes op het album. “Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn” is een zoet en oprecht eerbetoon aan Schotse folk, inclusief doedelzak. Dit is een volwassen maar verre van stijf album, en als altijd, is het gewoon een enorm plezier om de band te horen spelen.
