Director of his ensemble, Les Ombres, which he founded in 2008 with the violinist Margaux Blanchard, flautist Sylvain Sartre breathes new life into the Grands Motets pour la Chapelle royale composed by Charles-Hubert Gervais (1671-1744), one of the many composers enjoyed by this music-loving court.
Not much is known about this piece of music that’s often played second fiddle in the history of French music—even the year of composition of the three motets presented on this album remains a mystery. All that’s known is that they were much appreciated by Louis XV, especially the ‘Super Flumina Babylonis’, which opens this recording made at Versailles’ Chapel Royal in 2021.
In addition to a solid craft, these musical pages reveal a personal style that favours the dramatic whilst still respecting the foundations laid by Michel-Richard de Lalande. Nonetheless, Gervais doesn’t renounce his own theatrical style when it comes to evoking the violence of war or underlining the anger of the children of Edom - a small kingdom in Transjordan under the harsh control of the Babylonians.
A master of instrumental colour, Charles-Hubert Gervais easily compares with his glorious predecessors. His work illustrates once again the rich abundance of music that has graced the Palace of Versailles.
