French industrial dance duo Punish Yourself return with Gore Baby Gore!, an album as cartoonishly faux-transgressive as its quite silly cover art. The songs are surprisingly poppy, with more overt hooks and choruses than this style of music normally engages in; think early Nine Inch Nails, not Throbbing Gristle. A solid Roland 808-style '80s retro beat underpins most of the album, with occasional brief found sound and drone interludes in between songs as dancefloor friendly as "Sister Apocalypse" and the pounding, manic "Dexedrine Ritual." Gore Baby Gore! slips into an atypically restrained and gothy mode with the epic, doomy "Worms" but the album quickly gets back to the business of industrial disco decadence with the Foetus-like thump of "Gun" and "Las Vegas 2060s." Without taking themselves seriously in the slightest, Punish Yourself have managed an unpretentious blast of old-school dance-rock that's surprisingly entertaining.
