Laura Veirs’ twelfth album exudes sincerity, allowing us to flip freely through the pages of another chapter of her life. In 2020, the Portland native released her last album My Echo, which was inspired by her break-up with husband and long-time producer, Tucker Martine. The time that followed this life event eventually led to the creation of Found Light, where we see the singer take the helm for the first time. She shares the production with Shahzad Ismaily, a musician and producer who has worked with a host of big names, from Marc Ribot, Tom Waits and Lou Reed to Laurie Anderson.
The result is an incredibly refined and elegant album. The choice of acoustics certainly helps in this regard ('Autumn Song', 'Sword Song', 'Can’t Help But Sing', 'T & O'). These folk songs follow on from each other beautifully. They’re poetic, succinct, punctuated by haiku-like choruses ('Seaside Haiku'), heckled by the quirks of field recording, and feature kicks and guitar that might remind you of Warpaint ('Eucalyptus'). At times the instrumentals take on a more imposing and sophisticated demeanor ('Time Will Show You', 'Komorebi'). Watch out though, Laura can get carried away with the guitar riffs, as demonstrated through the saturated, agitated rock of 'Winter Windows'.
