Founding guitarist Guy Lyons departed just before the band recorded this seven-song set. Now a trio, guitarist Mike Gent, bassist Pete Donnelly, and drummer Pete Hayes are here at their peak as players. Their decade of working together had braided them together into a tough and knotty outfit. The EP opens with Donnelly's "Waiting For the Sun to Rise," a crash course in what makes this band click that's both rich in tradition and proudly their own signature. The bass playing--always their secret weapon--gives the song gorgeous tensions as it tugs against the guitar. The vocals embrace scruffiness, finesse, and melancholy in equal measure. The song's fade-out shows that the Figgs' love of recording has a life of its own outside merely capturing a performance. Mike Gent's three songs include the powerful and riveting "Excuse the Lame Excuse." Throughout, the arrangements are full and complete, with nothing obscuring the essential heart of each song.
