Era Vulgaris is genadeloos strak en precies, onophoudelijk in zijn momentum en opgewekt in zijn kwaadaardigheid. Net als andere Queens of The Stone Age albums, wordt er met gastmuzikanten rondgeparadeerd, maar híerop is het echt onmogelijk om te zeggen of Mark Lanegan nu bijgedragen heeft of dat het inderdaad Julian Casablancas van The Strokes is die de lead zangpartij zingt op “Sick, Sick, Sick.” Josh Homme heeft Era Vulgaris zo nauwgezet aangescherpt dat het onmogelijk wordt om wiens afdruk dan ook in het algemene geluid te ontdekken. QOTSA behoudt wat van de spookachtigheid van Lullabies, verder is dit bijna net zo alles-uit-de-kast-rock als Songs for the Deaf. Toch is het niet eenzijdig ontworpen. De appeal zit in de lenige precisie, hoe de riffs schuren alsof ze schroeven van hun draad ontdoen, hoe de ritmes onophoudelijk beuken.
