Gezien de manier waarop Dark Passion Play begint, is het begrijpelijk dat een soort opera aria verwacht wordt. Maar hou je goed vast, beste vrienden, want uit het niets komen plotseling metal gitaarriedels. Het album introduceert de nieuwe zangeres Anette Olson (vervangster van Tarja Turunen die haar stem lange tijd geleend heeft), maar de trouwe fans maakten zich zorgen dat deze verandering in samenstelling de sound en de richting van de band zouden veranderen. Er blijkt echter geen reden om zenuwachtig te zijn -- Nightwish is nog even bombastisch en dramatisch als altijd. Afhankelijk van je mening over metal is Dark Passion Play een symphonisch metal triomf of slechts pretentieus gewauwel.
