D-Stringz is an acoustic formula which brings together Stanley Clarke, Bireli Lagrène, Jean-Luc Ponty, and who also produces this album. The mentioning of their three names together piques one’s interest immediately: Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Biréli Lagrène. But, behind this stellar cast, there exists a real, blooded album. Listening to D-Stringz is a joyful experience. Here the bassist, violinist, and guitarist reaffirm the uniqueness of their respective styles. They do so whilst giving birth to an extremely consistent record, serving as a testament to their outstanding individual virtuosity. Far from being a case of vacuous, overbearing set pieces, D-Stringz offers the opportunity to hear these three big names in an electric jazz venture. They deliver inspired reinterpretations of four jazz standards (these superb renditions include ‘Clouds’ by Django Reinhardt, and ‘Blue Train’ by John Coltrane, in particular), alongside exuberant reworkings of their own compositions. In sum, Clarke, Ponty, and Lagrène have produced an exceedingly enjoyable strings record, demonstrating that their rich careers have not tailed off yet. Hats off. © CM/Qobuz
