This new recording of Carl Philip Emanuel Bach’s (1714-1788) complete works for violin and keyboard gives us the great chance to have a complete insight on the range of his art throughout his life. The Sonatas Wq 71 and 72 date from his youth – 1731, he was then only 17 years old and still under the influence of a certain father, even if the keyboard part is entirely written, not just a continuo. The Sonata, Wq 74 was written 1745, when he was already in the service of Prince Frederick II of Prussia, the Sonata, Wq 74 of 1754 when he was taking a close interest in Silbermann’s new instruments which would pave the way for the pianoforte. Sonatas Wq 75 to 78 are dated 1763, some time before he left Potsdam for Hamburg, while the Arioso con variazioni, Wq 71 was written 1781. The double album closes with the Fantasy, Wq 80 of 1787, the ultimate maturity of a great man who at the same time helped to launch and bring to life the Sturm und Drang then Classicism, while in return he benefited from the novelties signed Haydn or Mozart. The Amsterdam-based duo Belder-Kimura signs this double album, a great performance. The earliest works are played on a harpsichord, the most recent (i.e. Wq 71 and 80) on fortepiano, given the ever more pianistic content of the keyboard part. A rare and alas somewhat neglected repertoire, which the music-lover will discover with more than some astonishment. © SM/Qobuz
