Pianist Simon Trpčeski and conductor Cristian Măcelaru aren't household names, but they have very strong chemistry. Plenty of people were looking forward to this release on Linn Records, which made classical best-seller charts in the autumn of 2023, and it delivers distinctive readings of Brahms' well-trodden pair of piano concertos. For those of a certain age (or historical frame of mind), these readings will bring to mind those of conductor George Szell, who recorded these works with several different pianists. They are never highly dramatic, not even in the Beethovenian strains of the Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, where Măcelaru takes quick tempos in the first two movements and clocks in shorter than average for the whole. The emphasis is on the subtlety of interaction between soloist and orchestra, something Brahms surely would have appreciated, and Trpčeski's interactions with the orchestra are precise. The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 83, is more expansive, allowing the complexity of the music to unfold in full. The Trpčeski-Măcelaru partnership is one from which more is eagerly anticipated. Casual listeners may want a bit more oomph, but these are performances that reward multiple hearings.
