The performance by the Sam Rivers Trio at Ombria Jazz Festival Villalago (Italy, July 24, 1976) is one of the best exponents of free jazz, featuring Rivers playing tenor and soprano saxophones, flute and piano on an extended exploration of his "Black Africa". Active in jazz since the early 1950s, Samuel Carthorne Rivers (1923-2011) earned wider attention during the mid-1960s spread of free jazz. With a thorough command of music theory, orchestration and composition, Rivers was an influential and prominent artist in jazz music. (Qobuz)
