Snowy scenes, big expanses, beautiful nature everywhere… Scandinavia is often described by the same old clichés. Jazz is no exception. We tend to talk about Scandi jazz like it’s one big genre. Though each country has its own distinct style; Denmark’s scene rivals traditional North American jazz, Norway tends to get experimental and Sweden treads the line between the two. Nordic musicians have been adding their own unique touch to the genre since the 70s and the younger generation continue to sculpt its future. Here, we zoom in on Scandinavian jazz in 10 albums, offering a glimpse into a discography that’s as wide as a fjord.
Hard bop, hip hop, free jazz, groove, electro, calypso, experimental or Caribbean: the key players of the new British jazz scene are open to everything. They know their classics like the back of their hands though they certainly don’t hold back from exploring all kinds of genres, making for a wonderfully eclectic sound. Here we look back over ten essential albums.
If it weren’t for him, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau and thousands of other jazz pianists would play differently today. Forty years since his death, Bill Evan’s legacy lives on and is more influential than ever before. It’s certainly no mean feat selecting ten of his best albums from an endless discography where even the albums considered non-essential are still superior to 90% of other music. But here it is – a selection of 10 of his best albums, in our humble opinion.
