This CD is part of a sampler series put out by Blue Note in 1997. Tenor great Joe Henderson is heard playing five ballads and a pair of blues from two different periods of his career. A pair of the selections are taken from his 1963 Page One set with trumpeter Kenny Dorham and pianist McCoy Tyner, "You Know I Care" is a quartet rendition from 1964, and there are three numbers played with a 1985 pianoless trio also including bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster. But best is a classic (and haunting) rendition of "Lazy Afternoon" taken from a date actually led by drummer Pete LaRoca. Although the music is nice, Joe Henderson had too many highlights in his career (even just from his Blue Note dates) for them all to be included on one set. A decent sampler, but more serious collectors will want the readily available complete CDs instead.
