This delightful disc joins Bach's arias and duets for voice and violin, and picking these particular three artists to perform them was brilliant. Each is a turn-of-the-century discovery -- Hilary Hahn, the hotshot Kentucky violinist; Christine Schäfer, the sultry Frankfurt soprano; and Matthias Goerne, the brawny Weimer baritone -- and each has earned a star's place on the world's stages and recording studios. Each also has an affinity for the inward and spiritual music of Bach, and this disc lets them tackle works they might otherwise have to pass by. The program begins and ends with arias from the St. Matthew Passion: Goerne's robust "Gebt mir meinen Jesum wieder," to start, and Schäfer's soulful "Erbarme dich," to close. In between, the singers pair with Hahn in a sequence of excerpts from Bach's cantatas, and each artist gives his/her best in performances full of characteristic touches: Hahn's sweet but discreet vibrato, Schäfer's subtle but sensual glissando, Goerne's poetic but passionate phrasing. Accompanied with sensitivity by the Münchener Kammerorchester under Alexander Liebreich and recorded with clarity by Deutsche Grammophon, this recital deserves to be heard by anyone who enjoys the artists or, of course, the music.
