Op hun vijfde album A Thousand Suns zet Linkin Park hun langzame tocht richting middelbare leeftijd voort en verkiest een humeurige sound boven een metalsound. Als rechtgeaarde opvolger van Minutes to Midnight uit 2007 ruilt A Thousand Suns ook nog eens agressie in voor contemplatie. De gitaren worden begraven onder golven van kille synthesizers. Dat blijkt een toepasselijk geluid voor een rap-metal band die geen metal meer speelt, maar de levensangst nog niet heeft afgeschud en ervoor kiest deze naar binnen te richten in plaats van naar buiten. Slechts weinig rap-metal bands hebben ervoor gekozen hun leeftijd te aanvaarden. Het is daarom ook makkelijk om Linkin Park te bewonderen om hun keuze de leeftijd niet te ontkennen. Ook al hebben ze die luxe om muzikale risico's te nemen te danken aan hun megasuccessen. De ingetogen ritmes, riffs en raps op A Thousand Suns houden een broeierig humeur in stand.
