Vero
After oscillating between confrontational alt-pop and a dark post-punk on a pair of debut EPs, Stockholm trio VERO shed the synths and settled into a raw, upfront indie rock with overdriven guitars and urgent live drums more in line with the '90s and early-2000s sound of bands like Pixies and Elastica. That approach was well-represented on their debut LP, Unsoothing Interior, which saw release in 2022.
Led by singer and bassist Julia Boman, who began playing in bands in her native Västerås, outside Stockholm, at age 14, VERO is rounded out by guitarists Clara Gyökeres and Amanda Eddestål, the latter of whom began playing with Boman at 16. Forming in the late 2010s, they released their first EP, Saxophones and Danger Zones, in 2019 while still experimenting with different styles as they tried to home in on a defining sound. They found it as they were wrapping up their second EP, Heaven on Earth, which appeared in April 2020. In the meantime, the band opened for London post-punk revivalists Shame in Stockholm shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. While unable to play shows, VERO covered Shame's song "Concrete" for their first physical-format release, the 7" "BEG!" b/w "Concrete," for PNKSLM Recordings. It was issued in January 2022. "BEG!" was included on the group's debut album, Unsoothing Interior, which followed on PNKSLM that May. Unlike their previous EPs, it committed to a '90s and early-2000s-inspired articulate alt-rock reminiscent of Elastica and Garbage.
