For many people, the face of metal is thrash. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament—these are some of the most popular and revered metal bands of all time. Although there were early traces of it throughout the ‘70s, thrash metal was truly born in the American Bay Area during the early ‘80s by bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Overkill. However, it would soon spread all over the world, with central factions in New York City (Anthrax, Nuclear Assault) and, oddly enough, Germany (Kreator, Sodom, Destruction). The genre’s sound is relatively diverse; from punky acts like Suicidal Tendencies and Voivod; death metal-adjacent crushers like Possessed and Sepultura; and melodic arena titans like Megadeth and Slayer. But the fundamentals of thrash are speed, technicality, and a healthy balance of menace and playfulness.
