The C.I.A.
The C.I.A. is a collaboration between vocalist Denée Segall, her prolific garage-punk husband Ty Segall, and Emmett Kelly of Ty's live band and the Cairo Gang. The group utilize drum machines and synths as weapons, as well as an overdriven dual-bass attack that pushes and pulls at Denée's alternately cajoling and careening vocals. Their two albums (2018's self-titled and 2023's Surgery Channel) are a dramatic blend of early synthwave and off-kilter garage punk.
The trio made their debut with a handful of live shows in 2018 at which they sold a small-run cassette-only EP that included four original songs and a cover of "Magazine Love" by synth-punk pioneers the Screamers. In December, the band released a full-length, self-titled album on In the Red Records; it was the sixth album Ty Segall released in 2018. The band members stayed busy in the years that followed, with solo records and other collaborations. It wasn't until January of 2023 that they returned with second album Surgery Channel. It also came out on In the Red and featured an approach that dialed down some of the brutal noise of the debut in favor of something more nuanced and, while not exactly subtle, less in-your-face.
