Sparrows
Toronto-based outfit Sparrows play a cathartic, anxious strain of post-hardcore that is also heavy on melodic emo and dark, gritty textures. Based around the songs of singer/guitarist Dan Thompson, the group found some success with their 2013 debut Cold Ground before relocating to Toronto with a totally new lineup. Amid major tours of the U.S. and Canada, Sparrows offered up a second outing, Let the Silence Stay Where It Was, in 2016 before setting up their own label for 2019's intense Failed Golds LP.
Thompson first launched the band in Ottawa in 2010 and its first short-lived lineup appeared on just one recording, the 2011 EP Goliath. Within a year, Thompson had scrapped the original band and recruited guitarist Devlin Morton, bassist Brandon Desjardins, and drummer Rembrandt MacLeod to help him record Sparrows' 2013 debut album, Cold Ground. Following a move to Toronto in early 2014, the frontman once again cleared the deck and formed yet another lineup. Despite enduring a regular rotation of bass players over the next several years, the core trio of Thompson, guitarist Justin Sears, and drummer Jon Busby managed to solidify into a tight and powerful unit. Signing with New Damage Records, Sparrows began to make some waves, first with 2015's Dragging Hell EP then a year later with the full-length Let the Silence Stay Where It Was. Throughout this time, Thompson had developed a long-term collaboration with Moneen frontman, Kenny Bridges who had helped produce each of the band's releases dating back to Goliath. Sparrows broke tradition in 2018 and headed to New Jersey to record their next album with a different producer, Brett Romnes (I Am the Avalanche). By this point, Jack Panic had joined the group as their sixth bassist, and this quartet released their third full-length, Failed Gods, in 2019, inaugurating the newly minted Sound Anxiety Recordings.
