Lisa Moore
Pianist Lisa Moore is known for interpretations of a wide range of music from the early 20th century to the present day. She is the founding pianist of the New York ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars and has collaborated with more than 200 composers.
Moore was born in the Australian capital of Canberra in 1960. Her parents were both academics, one an art historian and the other an economist, and she grew up surrounded by innovative cultural figures such as Charles Blackman. She also traveled internationally and was raised partly in London. At age 16, she entered the Sydney Conservatorium, and in 1980, she moved to the U.S. for further study, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, a master's from the Eastman School of Music, and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stonybrook. Her teachers included Gilbert Kalish, David Burge, and Yvonne Loriod. In 1982 and 1983, she spent a year in Paris, supported by a grant from the Alliance Française. In 1985, she moved to New York City, and she has been based there ever since.
Moore's performing and recording careers have focused on 20th century and contemporary music. She has recorded ten solo albums and some 30 collaborative releases, with music ranging from Janáçek to Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and new music. Moore has collaborated on new works with many prominent contemporary composers. Her 2016 album The Stone People, with works by John Luther Adams, Martin Bresnick, and Missy Mazzoli, among others, was typical in its range and made the New York Times' list of the top classical albums of the year. She co-founded the Bang on a Can All-Stars in 1992 and remained with the group until 2008. Moore has also performed in major traditional venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2022, Moore released a recording of Frederic Rzewski's no place to go but around on the Cantaloupe label.
