La Sandonga

La Sandonga are an eight-piece band from Uruguay that plays in the Puerto Rican plena style. Although this style is not native to Uruguay, it became very popular in the country as a dance style alongside the candombe and tango, first appearing in the city of Montevideo in the 1950s. La Sandonga hail from this city, formed in the neighbourhood of Buceo in 2015. Their singer Paulo Farias is backed by a brass and percussion ensemble that includes two trumpets (Maxi da Costa and Mateo Martinez), trombone (Alito Gonzalez), keyboards (Juanchi Tolosa), bajo (Bruno Galli), congas (Agustin Pazos) and timbales (Facundo Feijo). The band takes pride in their live sound and brought this aesthetic to their debut EP 'Solo Pa Que Te Muevas' (2017). The following year several of the singles from this EP were released and reached millions of views on YouTube, including 'No Me Enamoro', 'Mayor Que Yo' and 'Negarlo Todo'. Later in 2018, the band released the singles 'No Puedo Más' and 'Yo Te Prometo' with the videos for both tracks reaching over three million views on YouTube.
