David Tao
A multi-time Golden Melody Award winner, David Tao blends R&B and hard rock into his own form of successful Mandopop. Born to Taiwanese parents on July 11, 1969, he spent the first half of his childhood in Hong Kong before moving to Taipei, Taiwan. His family relocated yet again during Tao's teenage years, this time settling in California. Tao remained in Los Angeles until the mid-1990s, when he returned to Taiwan and launched a music career with his self-titled debut album in 1997. The eponymous David Tao was nominated for five Golden Melody Awards the following year, setting a new record for a debut artist. It won in two categories. Tao became a recurring presence at the yearly Golden Melody events, going on to win awards for 1999's I'm OK, 2005's The Great Leap, and 2006's Beautiful. Active on the road as well as in the studio, he toured through Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore in support of 2009's Opus 69 and 2013's Hello Goodbye. Following a break from the spotlight, he returned to the Mandarin charts in 2020, when the holiday single "Christmas Kiss" peaked at Number 23.
