The sub-units unite as K-pop band NCT return for their third full-crew showing with Universe. Arriving at the close of 2021, this rousing set features a bevy of could-be hits, starting strong with the aggressive and propulsive "New Axis" and "Universe (Let's Play Ball)" from NCT U. As for the other sub-units, WayV contribute the English-language "Miracle," NCT Dream drop in with the wobbly electronic "Dreaming," and NCT 127 stomp through with the aptly titled "Earthquake." As the album progresses, the intense energy cools down for a back half balanced between smooth, R&B-inflected jams like "Round&Round" and "Vroom" and sweet, uplifting fare like "Beautiful" and "Sweet Dream," which are every bit as comforting as the titles suggest. As good as, if not better than, its predecessor Resonance, the chart-topping Universe is another strong showing from the multi-member collective.
