Steve Gunn's music finds a haunted middle ground between rootsy, John Fahey-inspired intricacy instrumental and post-Velvet Underground folky drone. The Unseen In Betweenis perhaps Gunn's most restrained album released under his own name, as opposed to Gunn-Truscinski Duo - though the guitar solo that closed opener "New Moon" serves as a fine reminder of his instrumental deftness. "Luciano" puts the mournful echo of Gunn's voice in the forefront, while the evocative "Lightning Field" conjures up images of Walter De Maria's massive desert art installation. And "Stonehurst Cowboy," written in memory of Gunn's father, is appropriately stark in its presentation. It does not hurt that Gunn is working with a fantastic array of musicians - notably, Meg Baird, whose vocals on "Vagabond" blend with Gunn's to memorable effect, lending the song an extra dimension. Gunn's been very much like running since 2013's Time Off, with each subsequent album exploring subtle differences in his songwriting. The Unseen In Between offers an impressive balance between introspection and evocation, with plenty of instrumental flourishes to keep things interesting. © Tobias Carroll / Qobuz
