In September 2018, Harrison Stafford, the emblematic leader and singer of this Californian reggae band, began a new chapter in his career by unveiling a new line up for Groundation, with eight musicians from the Sonoma Jazz University, for the album Next Generation. While the band has garnered the better part of their reputation on stage, with extended versions that would please reggae instrumental and dub section enthusiasts, this  is their first exclusively live album in their discography. As for the new members of Groundation, who seemed a little too reserved in studio, we suspected a tour might help them let their hair down and increase their confidence and legitimacy. And this is exactly what can be observed on this tour of Italy. On this captivating best of comprising of two concerts in Parma and Rome in June 2019, Groundation alternates between extracts from the last album and past hits (Undivided and Weeping Pirates and its seemingly endless key solo). Above all, the band sound wonderfully unified and demonstrate a great capacity for jamming that suggests beautiful things to come in the future. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
