Born in Seoul in 1984, Dong-Hyek Lim was the youngest student in history to attend the Moscow Conservatory, where he was the student of Lev Naoumov. Winner of several competitions, he was also the youngest winner of the First Grand Prize of the Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris in 2001. After his recording of Rachmaninov’s Second Concerto and his album dedicated to the 24 Preludes by Frederic Chopin for the Warner Classics label, he’s releasing the last two sonatas that Schubert wrote for piano under the same label.
The Korean pianist approaches these two lengthy works calmly and serenely, without trying to reproduce the metaphysical weight that can be heard in parts of the work, particularly in Sonata in B flat major, D. 960, which he interprets here as a sort of melancholic daydream. Dong Hyek Lim detaches the polyphony from the musical scripture by focusing on following the songs and counterpoints with great subtlety. Schubert doesn’t try to follow in Beethoven’s footsteps, instead choosing to follow his own path with Mozart as his guide. © François Hudry/Qobuz
