Famous producer of I feel love (Donna Summer) and of now classic soundtracks (Midnight Express, Flashdance…), Giorgio Moroder adopts with Queen of the south a nostalgic process for a TV show relating the story of drug cartels in the South of the United States. Lending prestige to flamboyant self quoting, this soundtrack is filled with references to the disco music typical of the Italian composer, with its bass lines with unshakable eighth notes blending with layers that are as much hypnotic. In this captivating endeavor, he is accompanied by producer Raney Shockne. It’s in the main theme (The Queen of the South), but also in Cemetery stroll or The Lifestyle, that Moroder’s touch is the most recognizable, making this soundtrack some kind of biased sequel of Scarface (one of Moroder’s bravura pieces). For the song Everybody wants to rule the world, the composer fully dives into the Latino landscape of the TV show through the intervention of Elena Mendoza’s feverish voice associated to exotic guitar solos. As usual, Moroder modifies a music stereotype, to the point that he ends up delivering a small gem that is clearly his. Alongside these dreamy tracks, you will find more aggressive and colder tracks, almost industrial (The Book of falling Kings, Amarrar). As for Scarface, Moroder doesn’t beat around the bush when he accompanies the violence of the drug cartels. But the originality of Queen of the South comes from its relationship with gender, since here women are calling the shots. This modern point of view is translated through the addition of celestial female voices, a new cliché whose irony is completely intended (Confession, The Color of snow). It’s some fine Moroder work. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
