Prolific is the word. King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard are out with their 15th studio album in 9 years of existence (!): 34 minutes of pedal-to-the-floor heavy metal, set to a climate apocalypse sci-fi storyline. “There is no Planet B!” is Stu Mackenzie’s message. The Mad Max-ish vibe, fueled by thrash guitars and a supercharged rhythm section, is a strong contrast to the timid blues-rock-boogie on Fishing For Fishies, released barely 4 months earlier. The key to this 180° turn is a lighter team: the album was recorded with 3 musicians instead of 7. Mackenzie’s vocals are absolutely possessed; he played guitar and bass in tandem with Joey Walker. Michael Cavanaugh is the unrelenting piston behind the drum kit. The references on the record are many: Slayer, Kreator, Sodom – 80s thrash metal legends are a large source of inspiration. The fire and fury of Self Immolate is punctuated by the story of a spaceship dweller who commits suicide by throwing himself into Venus’ atmosphere; these thought-provoking statements about climate change reach their high point on Hell: we are the architects of our own demise. © Alexis Renaudat/Qobuz
