Golden Hits is part of Mercury's mostly deleted American Essentials series. Presented here are 13 tracks from the '60s and early '70s, including "It's Four in the Morning" and the hit re-recording of "Goin' Steady." Everything on this collection was a Top Ten hit, but not all of Young's Top Ten hits from the period are represented. Golden Hits is a good companion to the Country Music Foundation's collection of his '50s honky tonk classics, although the brevity and lack of recording dates and substantial liner notes leaves open the possibility for a better anthology of this period.
