The highly sought after singer from Laurel Canyon, currently based near Topanga, returns with the delicate Eat the Worm. Lots of piano, brass, and strings, sparse drums, a keyboard, and even an organ and a vibraphone, but, as it turns out, very few guitars, besides “Charlie Parker,” “Hey Love,” “B.F.F.”, and more…Jonathan Wilson trades in his Southern crooner hat, deeply connected to the bluegrass/country crossover Dixie Blur (2020), recorded in Nashville, for more timeless attire, which seems to be largely influenced by the work he did in his own studios for his protégé Father John Misty’s Chloé and the Next 20th Century (2022).
The songwriter never stays in one place for too long, and instead constantly seeks uncharted territories to conquer, without caring which direction it takes him in. This is how this eighth album nonchalantly goes from the bizarro and experimental “Bonamossa” to the slow bossa undertow of “Wim Hof,” or to the laid-back psych-folk of “Ol’ Father Time” passing through the almost punk-like kinetic accelerations of the exalted “The Village is Dead.” Everything seems possible yet unexpected. Every track is a labyrinth, a trippy kaleidoscope to get lost in. One might ask how the Californian still manages to find time in his packed schedule, between his collaborations and a tour with Roger Waters. A masterclass in letting go. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
