Tenhi
A wildly progressive neofolk band from Finland, Tenhi combines the dark, rhythmic crunch of modern rock music with the acoustic instrumentation of a folk ensemble. The multi-instrumentalist Tyko Saarikko launched the group as a solo project in 1996, then added drummer Ilkka Salminen to the lineup in 1997. After signing a three-album deal with the German label Prophecy Productions, Tenhi added bassist Ilmari Issakainen to the roster and recorded demos like Kertomuksia and Promo Tape. The EP Hallavedet marked the band's official debut in 1998, followed by the full-length album Kauan in 1999. After releasing another EP, Airut:ciwi, in 2000, the band continued to expand its lineup, adding longtime members like Jaakko Hilpoö and Tuukka Tolvanen to the roster. The band's sound expanded, too, as heard on 2002's Väre, 2006's Maaäet, 2006's Airut:aamujen, and the 2007 compilation album Folk Aesthetic 1996–2006. Accompanied by instruments like acoustic guitar, cello, mouth harp, flute, violin, piano, viola, didgeridoo, harp, harmonium, synthesizer, and udu, the group went through another radical lineup shift in 2007, then released Saivo in 2011. By the late 2020s, much of the band's "classic lineup" had returned to the fold, making 2023's Valkama something of a comeback record.
