Tamar Berk

Singer and instrumentalist Tamar Berk is a literate songwriter with a haunting, atmospheric sound steeped in 1990s alt-rock and '60s psychedelia. A founding member of the Chicago group Starball, she made her solo debut in 2021 with The Restless Dreams of Youth. In the wake of her father's death, she returned with the ruminative yet still anthemic Start at the End in 2022 and Tiny Injuries in 2023. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Berk played music growing up and earned a degree in Photo-Illustration from Kent State University before moving to Chicago. There, she formed the power pop trio Starball and released several albums. She and her husband, musician Steven Denekas, eventually relocated to Portland, Oregon, in the early 2000s. There, they balanced working day jobs (Berk teaching grade school and Denekas working in advertising) with various musical projects, including playing in the indie rock bands the Pynnacles and Paradise. Berk also began working on solo material, recording the instruments at home. Following a move to San Diego around 2018, she further transformed her songs, recording with drummer Matt Walker (Morrissey, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins) and engineer Sean O'Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's, Rachael Yamagata). In February 2021, she released her debut full-length, The Restless Dreams of Youth, which she co-produced with Matt Thomson. Included on the album was the previously issued single "Shadow Clues," along with "Skipping the Cracks" and "Cleveland." Several months after the release of her debut, Berk's father died. She was still processing the loss as she began work on her follow-up album. Released in April 2022, Start at the End found the singer handling production duties, along with recording contributions by Walker, Thomson, and O'Keefe. Spotlight tracks like "Tragic Endings," "Hoping This Day Won't Kill Us," and "Alone Tonight" found Berk transforming her grief into emotive anthems rife with classic power pop and indie rock sensibilities. In August 2023, she returned with her third full-length album, Tiny Injuries.
