Special Friend

French/American duo Special Friend create a sound somewhere between contemplative slowcore and stripped-down indie pop, that takes cues from the noisily melodic charm of indie fixtures like Butterglory and Yo La Tengo while adding a healthy dose of heavy fuzz guitar to the mix. Their 2021 debut full-length Ennemi Commun laid out their template of sweet songs spiced with noise and drama, then they decided to focus on the more melancholy nature of their approach on 2023's Wait Until the Flames Come Rushing In. The band was formed in 2017 by drummer/vocalist Erica Ashleson and guitarist/vocalist Guillaume Siracusa. They got together in Montreal, Quebec and were quickly writing and recording original material. Their first release was a self-titled five-song EP, released in 2019 as a joint effort between four French indie labels. The EP had been quickly recorded in the band's practice space. In 2020 they began working with their friend Vincent Hivert to help them capture what would become their first full-length album on a Tascam 8-track. Those recording sessions eventually resulted in Special Friend's 2021 debut album, Ennemi Commun, a set of songs that found them further exploring vocal harmonies and synthesizer touches. The duo continued their quest to reimagine the sound of '90s indie rock on the second record Wait Until the Flames Come Rushing In, dialing back the guitar nosie in favor of a more measured approach that highlighted the melodies and the tenderness the duo brought to the vocals. It was released by Howlin' Banana and Skep Wax in June of 2023.
