Sister Squares

Danceable indie group Sister Squares first assembled around Arcade Fire member Will Butler as the touring band for shows connected to his 2015 solo album Policy. After Butler left Arcade Fire in late 2021, he collaborated more directly with the band on the 2023 effort Will Butler + Sister Squares. Sister Squares is made up of drummer/vocalist/producer Miles Francis and multi-instrumentalist/vocalists Sara Dobbs, Jenny Shore, and Julie Shore (Julie being sister to Jenny and married to Butler). Francis was drumming for Antibalas when they became acquainted with Butler through his presence in Arcade Fire. All four players backed Butler in 2015 when he toured in support of his solo album Policy, and they worked together on the 2020 follow-up Generations. When Butler parted ways with Arcade Fire after two decades with the band, he began collaborating more closely with his group, eventually moving from just asking for their input to having Francis work as producer and the previously unnamed quartet taking up the moniker Sister Squares. In 2023, Merge Records released Will Butler + Sister Squares, the self-titled debut from the anthemic, emotionally driven group.
