Simone White

Singer and songwriter Simone White creates powerful, atmospheric music that is by turns playful, soulful, and deeply personal. Her melodies draw from a wide range of influences, including folk, pop, blues, jazz, and electronic music, and plays strongly on dynamics, with her artfully unforced vocal style finding power in subtle, often whisper-quiet delivery. On albums like 2007's I Am the Man and 2009's Yakiimo, her music was rooted in her voice and acoustic guitar, with unobtrusive arrangements supporting her songs with other sonic colors. Singles like 2018's "Tiny Drop" and 2019's "Don't Turn Your Back on Love" and "The Beep Beep Song" saw White experimenting with electronics and pop-oriented production without sacrificing the intimacy of her voice and vision. White returned to a fully organic sound on 2018's Genuine Fake, with new versions of songs from her first three LPs featuring just her and her guitar. Born in Hawaii, White grew up in a creative household and traveled extensively, playing guitar and writing songs along the way. Eventually landing in New York City, she took up performing and recording her material. By 2004, she'd recorded and self-released her first album, The Sincere Recording Co. Presents Simone White. She was impressed by the album Master and Everyone by Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and wanted to make a record with a similar feel and approach. Through a friend, she was introduced to Mark Nevers, who produced the Bonnie "Prince" Billy album along with recordings by Calexico, Lambchop, and the Silver Jews. Nevers agreed to produce her next album, and after the sessions were completed for White's I Am the Man, the producer passed along a copy to friends at Honest Jon's Record Company, a British label run by Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz. I Am the Man became her first release for the label. The album received enthusiastic reviews, especially in the U.K., and one of the tracks, "The Beep Beep Song," was used in a popular television commercial for Audi. Her third album, Yakiimo, featured another song that was used in a widely seen TV advert, this time for women's watches featuring actress Nicole Kidman. For her fourth album, White explored her interest in electronic music by teaming up with Samuel Bing and Julian Wass from the group Fol Chen; the result, the album Silver Silver, was released in the spring of 2012. (She had previously appeared as a guest on Fol Chen's 2010 album Part II: The New December.) That same year, she provided backing vocals on a pair of albums by Andrew Bird, Break It Yourself and Hand of Glory. White collaborated with noted German electronic artist Kassem Mosse for a 2015 EP, Three Versions. She also ramped up her schedule of live work, opening for a wide variety of acts including Andrew Bird, Little Dragon, Mark Eitzel, Nouvelle Vague, and Victoria Williams. After parting with Honest Jon's Record Company, White took control of her recording career, self-releasing her material in cooperation with Fetch Happened Records. She issued Genuine Fake in 2018, which featured new recordings of songs from her early LPs, recorded with simple acoustic guitar and voice arrangements. She delivered a batch of fresh material on 2020's Letter to the Last Generation, and in 2021 a pair of limited-edition lathe-cut singles on the Brooklyn-based indie label Leesta Vall Sound Recordings appeared. A short-run vinyl album, Dream Comfort Memory, was released by Fetch Happened in 2022; that same year, Genuine Fake got a digital reissue.
