Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns

Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns is an improvisational trio composed of guitarist Mollestad, organist Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent), and drummer Ole Mofjell (Brute Force, Nypan). Their virtuosic, dynamic style crisscrosses prog-rock, electric jazz, fusion, psychedelia, and more, through group improvisation. Though improvisation has been a core component of her strategy as a guitarist, Mollestad began working on more-formal projects after 2020: Tempest Revisited was painstakingly adapted from a ballet by Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim and a collaboration with an orchestra, while 2022's Maternity Beat was recorded in collaboration with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. In early 2023, Mollestad was restless, seeking more freedom and a new creative direction. Rather than reform her touring and recording trio, she enlisted keyboardist/producer Ståle Storløkken to play organ and improv scene enfant terrible Ole Mofjell on drums to establish a improvising trio. Their jams found them combining and crisscrossing genres from jazz and fusion to prog-rock, dark ambient, and post-psych, all with an adventurous textural palette and controlled dynamics in free musical conversation and interplay. They developed a set list composed of cues and began playing, then recording impromptu shows. In September, Rune Grammofon issued a self-titled double album; its track list was drawn from those concerts.
