Elchin Shirinov
Azerbaijani jazz pianist Elchin Shirinov combines the folk and classical musics of his home country with a complex yet smooth strain of post-bop improvisation for an attractive, inviting sound. His debut album as leader, Waiting, was released in 2018.
Shirinov came from a folk music background, his two brothers studying traditional instruments at the Baku State Conservatoire. After they began to take piano lessons at the school, their father bought a piano and Elchin started playing it too. He was turned onto jazz when his brother gave him a tape of Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans, which he listened to obsessively. Initially self-taught, he later received some formal teaching, but never attended music school. Shirinov developed his own style combining Azeri folk and classical mugham with Western-style jazz.
In 2008 he got listeners' attention when he started performing at the Baku Jazz Center with his trio of local musicians. He toured with his compatriots, singer Sevda Alekperzadeh and saxophonist Rain Sultanov, and appeared at many international jazz festivals, playing with names such as Jon Scott, Ben Street, Jeff Ballard, Peter Nilsson, and Grzegorz Karnas.
After a self-released promo CD-R featuring his original trio, his first proper recording was the heavily folk-influenced 2017 album Maiden Tower, which he made with the Hungarian trio of Márton Fenyvesi (guitar), Mátyás Szandai (double bass), and András Dés (percussion). His debut album as leader, Waiting, appeared in 2018 on Japanese label Somethin' Cool and featured his trio with Italian bassist Andrea di Biase and British drummer Dave Hamblett. It featured adaptations of several pieces of Azeri music, both traditional and classical. Shirinov later played on Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen's albums Arvoles (2019), Two Roses (2021), and Shifting Sands (2022).
