Carpetgarden

Carpetgarden is the melodic and musically chaotic solo project of Los Angeles musician David Sweet. Since debuting in the late 2010s, Sweet has seesawed between various strains of lo-fi bedroom pop, from noisy indie rock to acoustic odes and ballads celebrating marginalized misfits. Through a barrage of self-released EPs and singles, they have achieved viral success with songs like "Can Ghosts Be Gay?" and "Heartbreak Hotel." Carpetgarden's 2022 EP WTF is even going on? explored themes of identity, gender dysphoria, and mental illness. It was followed in 2023 by the hooky single "Cheerleader." Sweet launched Carpetgarden in 2017, posting covers of other artists before debuting in 2018 with the jangly indie pop track "Close Yr Eyes" featuring Alfie Templeman. The 2019 EP Nightmare on Weed Street explored Sweet's wide sonic range, and one of its songs, the confessional ukulele strummer "Can I Have a Ride Home? I'm at a Party and I Don't Know Any1," became a viral streaming hit. By early 2021, Carpetgarden had signed with U.K. indie House Anxiety, which released the eight-song effort The Way He Looks. It contained a mix of lo-fi beat-driven tracks, fuzzy indie rock, and acoustic cuts including the breakout "Can Ghosts Be Gay?" Another EP, WTF is even going on?, appeared in 2022, further endearing Sweet to fans of vulnerable and adventurous bedroom pop. A pair of 2023 tracks, "CNTTHROAT" featuring Madge and "Cheerleader," delved further into noisy pop.
